District 14 Representatives
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been an incumbent since 2019. LCV Score: 97%
Despite being in her first term, Ocasio-Cortez has made a name for herself in environmental advocacy as an author of the Green New Deal. She believes in a correlation between economic stability and environmental sustainability, and has a near spotless voting record on environmental issues. Ocasio-Cortez also supports congress’s declaration of climate change as a ‘climate emergency,’ which could allow for increased congressional power with the extent of policies and funding. She is also an advocate for environmental justice, and proposed the Climate Equity act last year. The Climate Equity act aims to address climate change in a way that is beneficial for low-income communities, an idea that is also a focus of the Green New Deal. Her solid track record and specific plans make her a great candidate.
Badrun Khan is a Queens Community Board Member & School Financial Officer.
Khan has some solid stances on climate change, as she put her support behind New York City’s carbon plan, which will cut greenhouse gas emissions by 26% from current levels. She also supports a city mandate to recycle organic waste and campaigns to educate the public on recycling. However, Khan does not support the Green New Deal because of its cost to the American people; she is open to other, more cost effective approaches to switch to renewable energy. She also falls short of calling for a complete phase out of fossil fuels, saying that all technology and options should be considered, with the main goal to replace fossil fuels with renewable energy. We would love to see more specific plans from her.
